Nigara SPG Strix Hammered Damascus

There are plenty of beautiful Damascus knives around these days, but Nigara still has a way of making theirs immediately recognisable. The SPG STRIX Tsuchime Damascus combines Nigara's bold hammered texture with flowing stainless Damascus underneath, creating a blade that looks busy without becoming overly decorative. More importantly, underneath all of that is one of the more interesting new stainless steels to appear in Japanese kitchen knives in recent years.

SPG STRIX is a powder metallurgy stainless steel developed by Takefu Special Steel, the same company behind VG10 and SG2. What makes STRIX particularly interesting is how Takefu approached hardness. Rather than relying heavily on extremely hard carbide particles, they focused on strengthening the steel's matrix itself, aiming to achieve very high hardness while retaining better sharpenability and edge formation. Nigara takes the steel to around 63-65 HRC, giving these knives excellent edge retention and the ability to support a very fine edge, while STRIX is designed to remain friendlier on the stones than you might expect from a stainless powder steel at this hardness.

The geometry is equally important here. Despite the rather substantial and dramatic appearance of the blade face, these knives are ground surprisingly thin behind the edge. There is enough body through the spine to give the knife a firm feeling in hand, but once the blade enters the food, the thin lower geometry takes over. On carrots, onions and other dense vegetables, there is very little resistance at the edge, giving this line a cutting feel closer to a thin performance knife than its heavily textured appearance might suggest. Independent measurements across the line show relatively slim spines around the 2 mm range, while users consistently describe the knives as thin and exceptionally sharp cutters.

The stainless construction also makes this a fairly uncomplicated knife to live with. You get the edge retention and high hardness expected from a premium powder steel without the reactivity of carbon steel, while the combination of Tsuchime and Damascus gives the blade considerably more character than a simple polished finish. I think this line makes the most sense for someone who wants a genuinely high-performance knife but doesn't want performance to come at the expense of appearance. It is unmistakably Nigara: technically modern underneath, visually rather loud on the outside, and very capable once it reaches the cutting board.
